“You,” Kadaj said, even as the last green wisp coalesced back into his shoulder, “are not Mother.”

The fields of yellow and white flowers stretched out for ages in all directions, fading gradually to pearly nothingness like the sky, or what passed for sky in this place. There was no sun. No wind stirred the grass. No birds sang.

Aeris smiled fondly. “Of course I’m not your mother. You don’t need to worry about any of that, now. ”

“Worry?” Kadaj asked, staring up into the blank whiteness above him. His voice was distant. “Is that what it was?”

“Kadaj…” Aeris took a step closer to him, and raised her arms to embrace. The scent of flowers rose up sweetly around them. “You’re safe here. You can be happy. I promise. I’m not your mother, but I would like to be your friend.”

Kadaj stepped back from her, glaring. After a few long moments, Aeris dropped her arms.

“You lied,” he hissed.

“Not even once. Kadaj, listen—”

He turned his back to her and stalked away. Aeris watched him go, watched him become smaller and smaller at the end of a trail of trampled flowers and finally disappear from her view. She could still feel him, as she could all things in this place. He seemed unlikely to stop any time soon. Poor thing. He’d come back to her soon enough; everything did.

Eventually, at a distance, she felt his brothers come to her as well. They would be sad without each other, and that was no way to treat any of them. They’d been through so much. She sat down on the grass with a sigh and began to make a chain of the flowers. Before long Zack sat down next to her. She smiled and wrapped the chain around his neck.

“You want me to do something about them?” he asked.

She leaned her head against his shoulder. “Still a soldier,” she scolded him gently. “You know that’s not how things work here.”

“I know, I know. Still.”

“No. I promised they’d be safe. And they will be.”

He kissed her neck, then, and she turned to kiss him back. Kisses drifted into other things. As she and Zack moved together, she felt the brothers find each other too. Everything would be all right, they could be happy. She had promised.

Some time later, as she lay in the grass next to Zack, she felt rather than smelled the smoke. Smoke and the start of flames, in a distant part of her fields, and all three brothers together. They were happy. She could tell.

Aeris felt a chill stir in her stomach. Perhaps she’d promised a little too much.
